The NTIA and RUS are issuing separate rules for the second round of broadband stimulus funding, worth $4.8 billion.
The NTIA is allocating $2.6 billion in funding during the next round, of which $2.35 billion will go to infrastructure projects, with a focus on what the NTIA calls “comprehensive community” proposals: “middle-mile broadband projects that connect key community anchor institutions – such as libraries, hospitals, community colleges, universities, and public safety institutions,” the NTIA said.
RUS, meanwhile, will distribute $2.2 billion, with a focus on last-mile projects. It will also add “support” for satellite-based proposals, but only in areas that are left unserved after other funds are awarded. (more…)

Receiving nearly $16 million in smart grid stimulus funding was certainly a boon to the New Hampshire Electric Cooperative, as it was to the other 99 recipients, but the funding had a different meaning for this New Hampshire-based utility. It is owed $400,000 from Fairpoint Communications, the area’s main telco, which is busy wading through bankruptcy. (more…)

This week I attend my first Grid Week conference in Washington D.C., but I wasn’t the only newbie there. In contrast to most telecom trade shows this year, this jam-packed conference, in its third year of existence, sold out. The mostly vendor-driven show did have one important (at least to Connected Planet) segment missing, however – telecom service providers. (more…)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – AT&T (NYSE:T), like most telecom service providers, has gotten a foothold in the smart grid market by offering up its network to utilities seeking two-way communication with their customers. Today most deals stop at the network, but AT&T is realizing that the real market opportunity could come from providing services on top of the network to their utility customers. (more…)

One of the biggest drivers for smart grid deployments has been the cost savings it can bring both utilities and their customers, but this requires new methods of data management, new customer options and a new method of billing. To address this need, third largest US electric company and smart grid pioneer Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) today added Convergys (NYSE: CVG) to its growing list of partners. Convergys will provide Duke with smart grid billing and customer management. (more…)
