PayPal’s straightforward payment approach shines, more complex NFC fade
Every day, it seems, PayPal increases its estimates of transactions that it will process in 2011. Meanwhile, not a day goes past when the prospects for NFC seem dimmer.
For the past two quarters, PayPal has increased its predictions about how much money will pass through its digital doors in 2011. In April, it reported increased transaction values from $6 million to $10 million a day. This week, it upped its predictions for mobile transactions for the year by $500 million. (more…)
Google’s ‘Ice-Cream Sandwich’ finally arrives
Google and Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Nexus, the first device to run Android 4.0, known as Ice Cream Sandwich, which has been designed to work equally well on smartphones as tablets. Now available to Android users as the release moves onto more devices: NFC support, an updated browser, slicker Gmail app — and under the covers a single experience that ultimately will span the entire Android device universe.
“You won’t believe what we’ve managed to get done in this release,” Google CEO Larry Page enthused during Google’s earnings meeting last week (CP: Google puts Q3 emphasis on Google+ and Android Ice Cream Sandwich).
Over-the-top conundrum: Will iPhone sales balance out iMessage-driven SMS losses?
Count Sprint – and just today, C-Spire – as the latest operators falling for the iPhone. But teaming with over-the-top players, even Apple, could summon the law of unintended consequences, with device sales cancelled out from lost revenue from OTT apps like Apple’s iMessage. (more…)

Telecom operators’ networks have powered the rise of social media, but the operators themselves haven’t exactly been the most active contributors to it. Sure every carrier has a Twitter feed and Facebook profile, but they’re hardly in the same league as Lady Gaga. Ericsson adds carrier in-app billing capabilities
Ericsson today announced it has added an In Application Payment service to its IPX service platform currently integrated with more than 120 carriers. With Ericsson’s SK and wrapper technology, devs can create in-app payment opportunities — with mobile operators handling the billing — with payment models such as try before you buy, rental or subscription models.
