No 360 for VZW, but it stays commited to LiMo platform

Vodafone (NYSE:VOD) is puttingthe LiMo Foundations Linux-based operating system at the heart of its new social-networking centric mobile Internet portal, called 360, and plans to bring the phones and service to most of its global subsidaries this year and next. The big exception is Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ, NYSE:VOD), which tends to go its own way anyhow. But while VZW may not be participating in Vodafone’s global cloud applications extraveganza, it is still following its lead on the device. (more…)

Can mobile operators out-Skype Skype?

If you can’t beat Skype, you might as well join Skype–at least that’s what Kineto Wireless is proposing to mobile operators. Sprint pursues embedded devices with M2M DataSmart deal

The M2M partnerships keep rolling in. After a summer that saw AT&T (NYSE:Tpartner with Jasper Wireless and Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ, NYSE:VOD) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) form a joint venture to target the mobile telematics market, Sprint (NYSE:S) kicked off by announcing a multi-year partnership with M2M DataSmart, a machine-to-machine service aggregator that specializes in tailoring airtime plans for start-ups with new and unique applications. WiFi drives rise in enterprise FMC

Fixed-mobile convergence handset voice connections – defined as those made over WiFi, picocells or femtocells – for business customers will rise from 6.3 million in 2009 to more than 27 million by 2014, according to a new study from ABI Research. Femtocells have gotten the most attention in the enterprise, but report author Dan Shey said dual-mode cellular and WiFi phones will also drive enterprise FMC. (more…)

ALU CEO hints at business unit sales, more co-sourcing deals

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) CEO Ben Verwaayen isn’t done tinkering with his company yet. After selling off its stake in defence contractor Thales and entering into a major alliance with HP (NYSE:HPQ) to sell integrated communications and IT solutions, Verwaayan said there are plenty more plans in the works for more co-sourcing deals, the possibility of outsourcing some of its own product development and even the sale of some of its product divisions.
