Will you buy an Apple iPad? (poll)

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) began taking iPad pre-orders today for either the Wi-Fi-only version, available on April 3, or the AT&T (NYSE:T) 3G-plus-Wi-Fi version. Some analysts are predicting shortages, while others are pointing out the reasons you should wait to buy Apple’s computing device. The Wall Street Journal even breaks down whether a Wi-Fi-only iPad or 3G version, which even AT&T doesn’t believe will be most popular, is best for you. Will you be ordering either?

Leap, Metro M&A: A when, not if scenario?

Metro PCS (NYSE:PCS) has hired advisers to look into purchasing competing carrier Leap Wireless (NASDAQ:LEAP). This news comes just days after Leap reportedly began exploring a potential sale. Rumors of a merger between these two regional CDMA carriers have been circulating for years and, increasingly, it’s looking like a matter of when the merger will happen, not if it will.

Metro LeapMetro has retained JP Morgan Chase & Co. and Credit Suisse to explore the acquisition, according to Reuters. Last week, Leap hired Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to advise on potential buyers, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone. T-Mobile is reportedly also mulling taking over Leap at the same time that its parent company Deutsche Telecom is considering a potential sale, initial public offering or spin-off of T-Mobile. Super Bowl commercials tackle telecom (videos)

I know I’m not the only one who finds the commercials the best part of the Super Bowl each year. superbowlThis year was no different.

I picked up on several themes – going pantless is the new black, men are easily emasculated and beer – just lots of beer. But the telecom and Web world got a lot of attention this year too (see the videos below the break): (more…)

The NTIA is allocating $2.6 billion in funding during the next round, of which $2.35 billion will go to infrastructure projects, with a focus on what the NTIA calls “comprehensive community” proposals: “middle-mile broadband projects that connect key community anchor institutions – such as libraries, hospitals, community colleges, universities, and public safety institutions,” the NTIA said.

RUS, meanwhile, will distribute $2.2 billion, with a focus on last-mile projects. It will also add “support” for satellite-based proposals, but only in areas that are left unserved after other funds are awarded. (more…)

The Apple Tablet rumors’ visual aid

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will reportedly announce its plans for the Apple Tablet near the end of this month, but everything about the supposed device is still a rumor – when it launches, how it will be distributed, what it will feature – that it even exists is really still just a rumor.

Tech blog The Green Room summed up all the rumors for us in a visual depiction (after the break), with the bevy of rumors color-coded by their likelihood and linked to their original source. Looks like TGR gave our prediction that Apple would open up the Tablet to multiple 3G carriers a “likely” rating. Although, to be fair, we admitted that anything is possible. The only thing certain about Apple’s plans is that it will deluge whatever network it lands on –if it does land on one at all… (more…)
