Video challenge likely leads to new buzz word overload

videoAfter Cisco reported that mobile video will account for two-thirds of traffic by 2014, there have been no shortage of announcements about “video optimization” tools to help operators grappling with the sheer amount of computing power needed to support simultaneously streaming video sessions.A few months ago, Acision announced Media Optimiser, which promised to resolve some of the scalability issues becoming prevalent in video optimization solutions. Now, Sandvine (SVC) and Acision have announced they’ll partner to offer a new traffic management suite through OSS/BSS enhancements. That comes on the heels of announcements by Dialogic and Veraz Networks, and other announcements from Amdocs, Bytemobile, Juniper Networks, Openwave and F5—to name a few.

Whether these solutions will really help operators — currently managing traffic with offloads to WiFi and further network buildouts — is is hard to say. But one thing is for sure, policy management will definitely continue to grow in importance for managing traffic in the smartest ways possible.

Application- and user-aware policy management will therefore become even more buzz-wordy and popular as this video optimization boom continues. Never a dull moment.
