Comcast jumps into multi-room DVR race

dvrComcast has announced its entry into the multi-room DVR race, a new service fittingly called AnyRoom DVR. The service is rolling out in about 20 markets. It allows up to four DVRs, with each additional DVRs costing about $8. There is also a $30 activation fee for the capability.

DSL Reports has more:

“The expanded DVR functionality is part of Comcast’s “Xfinity” rebranding, which promises faster speeds (50 Mbps and ultimately 100 Mbps), additional HD channels, and improved DVR functions in upgraded markets.”

Dan O’Shea:

Maybe Comcast finally got tired of AT&T’s ubiquitous U-verse Total Home DVR commercials. Comcast was among the initial leaders in the move to HD and cable DVR offerings, but in this case the cable TV giant is late to the party. AT&T’s offering has been around for more than a year and a half, and other Comcast competitors such as Verizon and DirecTV have beaten Comcast to the punch, Even fellow cable guy Cox Communications already offers it. Now that multi-room DVR is almost reaching the level of being table stakes for TV service provider competition, what will be the next innovative competitive differentiator?
