In an impressive seven-slot jump, Facebook became the number three site for video streaming, trailing only market-leader YouTube and Hulu in total streams. The ranking, part of Nielsen’s latest VideoCensus numbers, was based on the fact that Facebook generated nearly 218 million total streams in October to more than 31.5 million unique viewers. In September, it only streamed 110 million videos to 23 million viewers.
While the sites are inherently different, popular free TV destination Hulu might be seeing a lot more competition from the leading social network. Hulu already has enough reasons to worry with ventures like the cable and telco’s TV Everywhere threatening its business, which hasn’t been lucrative to begin with. Facebook is also nabbing its own premium content, like the premiere of Community, ironically from Hulu’s parent, NBC. A little social prowess goes a long way, and Facebook has that market locked up. Online video could come next.
