Motorola ships 10,000th WiMax base station

Motorola (NYSE:MOT) has shipped 10,000 WiMax access points or base stations, drawing on 35 network contracts globally for the new 4G technology.

Many of those base stations likely wound up in Clearwire’s (NASDAQ:CLWR) network, where Motorola has built out large markets like Chicago, Las Vegas and Atlanta and has many more metro networks going live later this year and next. But the vendor has also secured contracts for deployments in regions as far-flung as Ireland and Pakistan.

Today Clearwire commercially activated Chicago, Motorola’s largest market buildout to date, with a footprint of more than 600 base stations covering the city and surrounding suburbs.
