Survey: Last walled garden will wither by 2012

The walled garden’s days are numbered. According to a new Deloitte survey of wireless industry executives, the closed business models for delivering mobile content and applications will fade away in the next three years and be replaced by open mobile content business models. In fact, most of those executives feel the future of their service provider businesses depends on completing that transition.

The Deloitte survey found that 53% of network operator respondents believed the walled garden will be a thing of the past in 2012 and new open platforms like Google’s Android will reign supreme. While a little less than half still thought that a few walls may still linger that year, most of them didn’t feel they’ll be the carriers maintaining them. 67% said open mobile content will be “game changing,” and 74% said that their survival in such an environment depends on them executing an open platform strategy well.
