Verizon Demonstrates Near Gigabit-per-Second Throughput on Its Existing FiOS GPON Platform

Test Shows Current FiOS Network Offers Bandwidth Headroom to Meet Emerging Business and Consumer Needs

WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 16 — Verizon has completed a field trial in which it delivered approximately 1 gigabit-per-second bandwidth to a customer on the currently deployed gigabit passive optical network in a live production FiOS network setting. This kind of capacity and versatility will enable Verizon to accommodate a wide array of new and emerging consumer and business services such as 3DTV, desktop virtualization and remote storage, as well as wireless backhaul for the next generation of wireless technologies.

Verizon’s GPON platform supports a total throughput of 2.4 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream to customers connected to the PON. This test successfully demonstrated the ability to serve customers on the FiOS network with Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) service.

Qwest Reports Second Quarter 2010 Results

Qwest Communications today reported financial results for the second quarter 2010. In the quarter, the company reported expanded margins, improved year-over-year revenue trends across all segments and strong cash flows.

In the second quarter, net income was $158 million. Earnings per share were 9 cents compared to 12 cents in the second quarter 2009. The current quarter’s earnings per share results include a 2 cent charge for severance, realignment and merger-related expenses, which was offset by a 1 cent gain related to the accounting treatment of the company’s convertible debt. Results in the prior-year period include net one-time benefits from special items of 4 cents per share.

Stimulus Award Winner Wabash Mutual Telephone Selects Occam Networks to Expand Broadband Services in West Central Ohio

Occam Networks announced today that Wabash Mutual Telephone , a subscriber-owned telephone exchange in Mercer County, Ohio, has chosen Occam and its BLC 6000 multiservice access platform (MSAP) to expand broadband services in west central Ohio.
