Shaw and Cisco to Partner on Advanced Wi-Fi Network

Shaw Communications and Cisco Systems announced an agreement to deploy an extensive Wi-Fi network in Western Canada — to provide wireless broadband access.

The broadband wireless network will be available to Shaw customers in various markets where Wi-Fi access points are deployed. The availability of this next-generation network will allow Shaw customers to connect their Wi-Fi enabled devices — such as media tablets, mobile phones and portable computers — to thousands of Wi-Fi access points, located within Shaw’s communities.

Data usage and the demand for connectivity continue to increase: according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast (2010-2015), there will be nearly 15 billion network connections by 2015. Shaw will use several advanced Cisco Internet networking technologies, including the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System, and Cisco ASR 5000 and 1000 Series routers to deliver enhanced video, data, and mobile services to residential and commercial customers.

Cisco Introduces Three Powerful New Routing Platforms

Cisco today announced a major advancement in Internet networking with three new platforms in the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers System engineered to facilitate the proliferation of new mobile Internet services and devices such as tablets, smartphones and connected appliances.

Cisco is continuing its tradition of innovation by announcing a simpler way for service providers to architect the next-generation Internet to be more visual, mobile and virtual.

Fueled by Cisco’s advanced nV (Network Virtualization) technology, which intelligently blends the network edge, aggregation and access layers into a single 96 Tbps system, the new routing platforms will allow service providers to dramatically increase network capacity and accelerate IPv6 services. These platforms will also enable service providers to cost-effectively converge and manage residential, business and mobile services with unmatched simplicity through virtual capabilities and resource sharing.

The three new platforms for service providers include:

Verizon First Global Service Provider to Deploy 100G on U.S. Long-Haul Network

NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — In another industry first, Verizon has deployed 100G (gigabits per second) technology on an ultra-long-haul optical system on a portion of the company’s U.S. backbone network.

The company plans to deploy this next-generation technology on more than 10 routes in 2011, taking advantage of the advanced technology to significantly reduce latency – the time it takes for data sent from its entry point in the network to reach its destination — as well as provide greater capacity per fiber and to help control costs.

Using Ciena’s 100G coherent optical transport solution – the same equipment Verizon used for its 100G deployment in Europe earlier this year — this high-capacity, ultra-long-haul system helps customers move time-sensitive information more effectively between strategic business locations.

“We’re seeing not only growth in traffic, but also in the need for immediacy from our customers that more

TIM Building an Advanced IP Network in Brazil

As part of its infrastructure technology development project, TIM is investing 20 million BRL to improve its network quality and expand its capacity.

The new initiative includes replacing all the core IP equipment (National Multiservice IP Network) with the Cisco CRS-3 Carrier Routing System. TIM has been a pioneer in Brazil and is one of the first telecom operators in the Latin America to use these routers. It plans to conclude installation of all 12 routers by the end of November.

The new generation of routers has an individual capacity of up to 4.5 terabits per second, up to 14 times faster than the equipment currently used by TIM and up to three times faster than other market technologies.

Manufactured by Cisco, one of the major companies on the IP network market, and deployed in partnership with Italtel, the CRS-3 routing system is the platform for evolving more
