Airband and Sparkplug Communications Announce Merger, Creating the Largest Fixed-Wireless Company in the U.S. Serving Businesses

Equity investment and debt financing totaling $20 million in funding to fuel further market expansion

DALLAS and SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Aug. 19, 2010 – Fixed-wireless companies Airband Communications and Sparkplug Communications today announced they have merged, creating the largest fixed-wireless company for businesses in the U.S., providing a full suite of voice and data services in 17 markets.

Airband and Sparkplug customers will continue to benefit from the flexible and highly scalable voice and data services delivered over the company’s wholly owned, fixed-wireless last-mile network which bypasses the wireline local loop, thereby creating cost savings for business customers. Fixed Broadband Subscriber Numbers Approach 449 million in 2Q 2010, According to ABI Research

SINGAPORE–The number of fixed broadband subscribers totaled just under 449 million in the second quarter of 2010, according to ABI Research’s most recent broadband subscriber Market Data. This represents a 10% increase over the same period in 2009. “The key fixed broadband subscriber growth was found in the Asia-Pacific region, adding approximately three million subscribers in the second quarter of 2010,” says digital home practice director Jason Blackwell.

Despite continued economic uncertainties in the European telecommunication market, European fixed broadband growth results were positive in the first half 2010. However, growth was slower than that in 2009, especially in the saturated markets such as Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland.
