Proxim is First to Break the 300 Mbps Speed Barrier for 802.11n Solutions, Enabling WLAN Networks at Half the Cost

Proxim is First to Break the 300 Mbps Speed Barrier for 802.11n Solutions, Enabling WLAN Networks at Half the Cost

Proxim’s 802.11n APs Reduce Cost and Simplify Deployments While Achieving Industry’s Highest Throughput

Silicon Valley, November 17, 2008Proxim Wireless Corporation (NASDAQ: PRXM), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play, today announced the availability of the industry’s first 802.11n solution to achieve 320 Mbps of throughput with a dual-radio solution.  In addition, Proxim’s new 802.11n products have been designed to be customer-friendly and overcome the barriers of cost and complexity faced by competing products to deliver 802.11n networks at half the price of existing WLANs. With Proxim’s ORiNOCO® AP-8000 and AP-800 802.11n access points, organizations of all sizes can achieve higher performance than their existing wired and wireless LANs while avoiding the costly controller upgrades, deployment challenges, and additional network planning that have deterred enterprises from upgrading to 802.11n.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 Dual-Radio 802.11n AP

Realizing the Truly Unwired Enterprise

IEEE 802.11n is the next generation of the Wi-Fi standard.  The primary advantages of 802.11n-compliant products are significantly higher throughput and longer range. With the advent of 802.11n technology, the truly unwired enterprise is possible – yet many organizations cite the high cost of migration and the complexity of deployment as barriers to moving to 802.11n.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 dual-radio and AP-800 single-radio APs overcome the challenges hindering adoption by achieving numerous key industry firsts:

  • First 802.11n solution to achieve greater than 300 Mbps throughput performance, with dual-radio throughput rates tested at 320 Mbps
  • First 802.11n solution to work within the 802.3af (POE) power requirements in both single- and dual-radio 3×3 MIMO 11n configurations, eliminating the cost and hassle of additional wires and power injectors to each AP that are typically required with competitive 802.11n products
  • First solution to support Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) globally in all 5 GHz bands, which eliminates the worry of network interoperability and interference and provides 10 times the number of channels available at 2.4 GHz
  • First solution to support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation on each 802.11n radio, providing the flexibility for deployment in various environments
  • First 802.11n solution that utilizes the same mounting hardware as existing Proxim 802.11a/b/g APs, greatly simplifying upgrades unlike competitive 802.11n products which often require new mounting hardware

“802.11n is the most important development in wireless LANs since the original standard of 1997,” said Craig Mathias, a Principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. “Proxim has been building wireless LANs since before there was 802.11 and Wi-Fi, and their experience shows with new .11n products that allow for simplified upgrades to existing installations and also appeal to those just getting started with wireless LANs. 802.11n offers better performance than most wired networks, along with the flexibility and convenience of mobility - Proxim’s announcement clearly shows that the era of the unwired enterprise has truly arrived.”

Proxim ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-8000 and ORiNOCO AP-800 access points enable the industry’s highest performance, easiest to use, and most cost-effective 802.11n networks for enterprises of all sizes. Proxim 802.11n solutions have achieved the industry’s highest performance to date with throughput exceeding 170 Mbps with a single radio and 320 Mbps with a dual radio solution. However, Proxim focused on more than just introducing a product with the industry’s leading throughput – Proxim engineered its products to be simple for its customers to use.  Many competitive products require substantial investment in additional infrastructure before they can be installed. These real-world costs can quickly deter enterprises from upgrading to enjoy the benefits offered by 802.11n products.  Proxim’s AP-8000 and AP-800 provide an 802.11n solution that enables customers to quickly, easily and cost-effectively deploy the highest-performance 802.11n network available.

“Proxim has been responsible for deploying and managing our Wireless LAN for the past 7 years at each of our Microsoft TechEd EMEA conferences. This year we had 4300 connected wireless users at the IT Professionals conference in Barcelona where Proxim had installed 5 of their brand new 802.11n access points. The access points performed flawlessly at the conference with a peak usage of 70 users per radio and peak throughput of 175 Mbps,” said Luca Balbo, Group Manager, Event Marketing at Microsoft Corporation. “We have added an additional 2 access points for this week’s Developers Conference and will also be using the AP-8000 at next week’s Microsoft Convergence conference in Copenhagen. These events have a very large number of power users and the performance of Proxim’s new 802.11n access point has been remarkable.”

Higher Performance than Existing Wired LANs/WLANs

Proxim’s ORiNOCO 802.11n products enable enterprises of all size to finally unwire the wired LAN by providing greater performance than existing Ethernet networks.

  • Highest throughput with single radio rates of over 170Mbps and dual radio rates of 320Mbps
  • Substantially higher throughput than typical 10/100 wired LANs
  • No need to run new cable to add stations to a LAN
  • 7x the throughput of existing typical WLANs
  • High reliability for quad play applications
  • The only solution to provide dual 2.4 GHz and dual 5GHz operation
  • The first solution certified to work for the entire 5 GHz spectrum worldwide

Half the Cost of Existing WLANs

Proxim’s 802.11n solution drastically reduces the cost of WLAN deployments using 802.11a/b/g products.

  • With the added range and throughput, ORiNOCO 802.11n deployments cost only half of today’s 802.11a/b/g networks when deployed to achieve the same capacity
  • Proxim’s 802.11n solution provides two times the range of standard 802.11a/b/g APs to ensure enhanced signal strength to hard-to-reach clients in the office, which simplifies deployment

Reduced Cost of Upgrading to 802.11n

Proxim’s ORiNOCO 802.11n products are the first to overcome the deployment challenges and the associated costs of competitive 802.11n products by eliminating the need for forklift upgrades, additional wiring, or additional network planning.

  • Because Proxim does not require costly WLAN controllers, Proxim 802.11n networks can cost-effectively scale to meet increasing bandwidth demands in the future
  • ORiNOCO 802.11n APs are the only APs on the market that are completely 802.3af compliant in all configurations, which avoids the cost of additional wiring or power injectors as required by 802.3at compliant APs
  • Proxim’s 802.11n APs utilize the same mounting hardware as existing Proxim 802.11a/b/g APs, enabling simple swap out of old APs and making upgrades a snap

Distributed WLANs with Centralized Management

To provide centralized management of Proxim 802.11n networks, the ProximVision ES network management system supports the ORiNOCO AP-8000 and AP-800 products. The ProximVision ES network management system provides rapid network deployment and mobile configuration – providing a complete view of the wireless network and comprehensive device configuration. The product installs on Windows XP, Windows 2003 and Windows Vista and supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3. Primary benefits include:

  • Rapid Network Deployment ProximVision ES automates configuration processes for faster, more efficient deployment of Proxim Wireless networks.
  • Mobile Configuration Capabilities ProximVision ES gives network managers a mobile option for exhaustive device configuration with a software-based tool.
  • Greater Ease of Use and Upgradability ProximVision ES can support a greater number of APs than competitively priced solutions and provides the simplest path to configuration and upgrade.

Acme Packet Showcases Border Control Solution Leadership at Interconnect 2008

BURLINGTON, MA, NOVEMBER 17, 2008 — Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced a series of live solution demonstrations to be presented at Interconnect 2008, the company’s fourth annual worldwide user conference being held November 16-18 in Miami, Florida. Nine interconnected demonstrations showcase new capabilities for delivering enterprise, contact center, wireless/FMC and wireline services and applications. The demos collectively feature all of Acme Packet’s products—session border controller (SBC), session routing proxy (SRP) and multiservice security gateway (MSG), and integrate selected products and services from Acme Packet partners. These partners include AirWalk Communications, BroadSoft, Chinook Hosting Corp, EXFO Navtel Product Group, NetNumber, NewStep Networks, Stealth Communications and Tatara Systems.

“‘Smartly simplifying communications delivery’ is the theme of this year’s conference and these demonstrations show our customers how to do that,” explained Seamus Hourihan, Acme Packet’s vice president of marketing and product management. “We are especially thankful to those partners who contributed their assistance this year and we look forward to including more partners from the many on our roster at future events.”

Demonstrations being presented at Interconnect 2008 include the following:

FMC services for dual-mode Wi-Fi/GSM phone
Acme Packet’s MSG and SBC deliver FMC services to a dual-mode Wi-Fi/GSM phone running NewStep Networks’ mobile SIP client. The MSG secures delivery over the Internet and Wi-Fi networks using IPsec tunnels for SIP and RTP traffic to and from the phone. The Net-Net SBC interfaces to NewStep Networks’ Converged Services Node (CSN) for call anchoring and voice call continuity with seamless handoff between the Internet/Wi-Fi and GSM cellular networks.
FMC services for CDMA femtocell-connected phone
The Net-Net MSG and SBC are also used to deliver mobile services to a CDMA phone via AirWalk Communications’ EdgePoint femtocell access point. The femtocell converts CDMA protocols from the phone to SIP and RTP, and tunnels the traffic over the Internet using IPsec to the Net-Net MSG. The Net-Net SBC provides SIP session control and interfaces to Tatara Systems’ Tatara Convergence Server (TCS) for interworking and session hand-in/hand-out with the 2G/3G cellular network.
High-definition video delivery with Quality of Service
In this demo, the Net-Net SBC controls the delivery of Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)-based video over a bandwidth-constrained broadband access network. The SBC controls video stream admission into the access network by querying an external policy server and assigns appropriate QoS marking for the stream’s packets. The SBC also provides access controls and topology hiding for securing the video servers.

SIP trunking for Unified Communications and IP PBXs
Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBC securely consolidates SIP trunking for Unified Communications services and IP PBX systems from leading vendors.

Microsoft OCS to BroadSoft® BroadWorks® interworking for “click-to-call” applications
Acme Packet’s Net-Net InterWorking Gateway seamlessly integrates Microsoft OCS unified communications platform with BroadSoft’s BroadWorks business telephony platform. The gateway enables “clicking” on any name or number on a Microsoft Office Communicator client and “calling” that name/number using the BroadSoft phone and platform. Microsoft Gold-Certified Partner, Chinook Hosting, and its parent company, implement.com, are demonstrating both service provider-hosted and enterprise-hosted deployment models utilizing Microsoft’s Hosted Messaging and Collaboration (HMC) version 4.5 integrated with BroadSoft’s BroadWorks.

Routing for “find me/follow me” services
In this technology demonstration, Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBC and NetNumber’s TITAN platform, a private ENUM database solution, provide routing for a basic “find me/follow me” service across SIP wireline and mobile phones. The Net-Net SBC functions as SIP registrar for the SIP endpoints and updates the ENUM database with endpoint location information via dynamic DNS. Net-Net SBCs query the ENUM database to retrieve routes to multiple subscriber endpoints as well as current subscriber preferences.

Core session routing and IP interconnect
Acme Packet’s Open Session Routing (OSR) architecture will be on full display as the Net-Net Session Router (SR) provides transaction-stateful routing for the Interconnect 2008 demonstrations. NetNumber’s private ENUM server will guide the routing of local calls. Stealth Communications’ Voice Peering Fabric (VPF) will provide ENUM-based URI-to-E.164 number resolution so that endpoints located in the demo area can initiate and receive calls to and from the PSTN.

Net-Net 4500 SBC performance
Acme Packet’s new Net-Net 4500 SBC will be tested with a
Navtel/EXFO InterWatch R14 SIP load generator and demonstrate SIP signaling performance that is 2-3 times more than the Net-Net 4250. Like all Acme Packet platforms, the Net-Net 4500 features carrier-class high availability. It supports up to 64,000 media sessions to handle media-intensive next-generation services such as interactive video.

Net-Net EMS and embedded management enhancements
Enhancements in Acme Packet’s embedded management system and the Net-Net Element Management System (EMS) have increased performance and capacity for managing networks with an ever increasing number of Acme Packet systems. These enhancements have reduced configuration discovery, save and activation times; and increased the number of network elements and users supported by the Net-Net EMS. Integration of Acme Packet’s products with third-party management tools will also be shown.

Proxim Wireless Selected as the WLAN of Choice for Microsoft’s TechEd Event for the Seventh Consecutive Year

Proxim’s WLAN to Provide VoIP and Data Connectivity to Over 5,000 Attendees

Silicon Valley, November 4, 2008 – Proxim Wireless Corporation (NASDAQ: PRXM), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play, today announced that Microsoft Corporation has selected Proxim to provide the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for both its TechEd Professional and TechEd Developer events, which are being held in Barcelona, Spain. This is the seventh consecutive year that Microsoft has selected Proxim to provide the high-performance WLAN capable of supporting data connectivity and wireless VoIP for the more than 5,000 expected attendees of each event.

“Our TechEd events are the premier technology education conferences for both IT professionals and developers alike. The wireless network we select each year is crucial not only to keep the conference running smoothly, but to keep our attendees connected and productive throughout the event,” said Luca Balbo, Group Manager, WW Event Marketing at Microsoft Corporation. “The reason we have selected Proxim for our WLAN at these events for seven years in a row is clear – Proxim’s WLANs simply work. They are easy to install, are very cost effective and provide the high-performance needed to handle the demanding network environment of these conferences.”

For both events, Microsoft will be deploying Proxim’s ORiNOCO® AP-4000 access points to provide the high-throughput, security and manageability needed for a network of this size. The entire Proxim WLAN can be installed and operational in a single day, which makes preparation much easier for onsite IT staff while saving time and money. Proxim’s network management solutions provide simple, centralized management of the entire network, as well as enhanced QoS.

Boston.TV Taps Azuki Systems and thePlatform to Deliver Optimized Mobile Video Experience

Premier Online Video Network Leveraging Azuki’s MashMedia Platform and thePlatform’s Media Publishing System to Extend Desktop Content to Mobile Devices

ACTON, Mass. – November 4, 2008 – Azuki Systems, Inc., an innovator in the interactive mobile media technology market, today announced it is working with thePlatform, the leading white-labeled video management and publishing company, to extend Boston.TV’s desktop content to mobile devices, and enable the rapid and seamless socialization of rich mobile media. Boston.TV, Boston’s premier online video entertainment network, is leveraging Azuki’s MashMedia Platform and thePlatform’s Media Publishing System (mps) to build and sustain mobile community around Boston events, entertainment, sports, music, restaurants, arts, parties and more.

Through its relationship with Azuki and thePlatform, Boston.TV can automate the process of optimizing its already-popular desktop videos and other rich media content for mobile devices. In turn, mobile users can easily view and interact with content on any of Boston.TV’s ‘channels’ – Food, Sports, A&E, Lifestyle and Business – and engage in mobile social networking by commenting on and rating relevant videos and sharing annotated media via BuddyBlast functionality with contacts across SMS, Facebook, and other social networks.

“We wanted to make our unique, short-form, Web video content easily accessible to mobile users, as well as entice our PC community to follow us to the ‘third screen,’” said Eran Lobel, founder of Boston.TV. “Through our work with Azuki and thePlatform, mobile users can have a personalized, interactive experience and can help shape and define the best elements of Boston.”

The relationship between Azuki Systems and thePlatform offers content publishers a hassle-free mechanism for automating the process of extending content from the desktop to mobile devices. With thePlatform’s mps, content publishers have a central hub for managing, monetizing and syndicating video content. Azuki’s MashMedia Platform brings this content to a mobile audience, enabling companies like Boston.TV to easily build, deploy and monetize interactive mobile media services, as well as serve content and advertisements that are highly relevant to individual users.

“Boston.TV offers a compelling catalogue of content that is well-tailored to a localized and mobile audience,” said Jordan Friedman, senior business development manager, thePlatform. “By pairing our content management capabilities with Azuki’s suite of personalization and socialization services, Boston.TV will be able to quickly publish its content to a host of mobile devices and audiences.”

In addition, Azuki’s joint marketing relationship with thePlatform enables content publishers like Boston.TV to easily deliver personalized and interactive video streams to mobile devices. The solution eases the roll-out of interactive mobile media services and establishes a stronger link between Web and mobile content offerings, with automated extraction of newly uploaded content from thePlatform’s mps.

“Our relationship with thePlatform will enable Boston.TV and other content publishers to easily move their rich media content – and, consequently, their PC audience – to the third screen, fostering community around compelling and easily socialized services,” said Azuki CEO Jim Ricotta. “As companies seek fresh ways to engage and make lasting connections with their viewers, they’ll follow the example of pacesetters like Boston.TV and harness the attention-grabbing powers of personalized, interactive mobile video.”
