Airvana femto meets broadband benchmarks

Airvana today revealed that performance tests of 3G femtocell succeeded in blanketing a home in CDMA EV-DO coverage, achieving rates higher than 2 Mb/s in all of a trial house’s nooks and crannies—rates that far exceed what is typically available to a user on the macro-cellular network. The results bolster Airvana’s claims that the femtocell could be used not only to provide better voice coverage in the home, but also to boost 3G data capacity. (more…)

Skuku launches WinMo roaming app

Roaming charges are not a big pain point in the United States, but they are a prominent concern for international travelers. For these consumers, an extensive list of voice-over IP providers offers relief in the face of exorbitant roaming charges in excess of $50 billion annually. The market for VoIP is crowded with alternatives, but Israeli-based Skuku is hoping the combination of low costs, the ability to keep the same phone number and integration with mobile phones will differentiate it from its competitors. This year, it’s a different story. (more…)

CTIA: Can The Industry Adapt?

Having just caught our breath from covering Mobile World Congress from our home base, Telephony — along with (hopefully) the rest of the wireless industry — is getting ready to make the trip to Las Vegas for the CTIA Wireless show. While the industry organization’s acronym stood for Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association when it was first founded, this year it might as well also stand for the question on everyone’s mind: Can The Industry Adapt — to the economy, to the increasing demand for anywhere content and to the increased pressure today on wireless networks? The answer has to be yes, of course, but there’s work to be done. (more…)

Questions and more questions about LTE

Now that Verizon Wireless has laid out its long-term evolution plans, carriers from across the land are probably wondering what this whole 4G concept means. They’ll be arriving at CTIA Wireless next month with a laundry list of questions about LTE and how it fits into or affects their future business plans. (more…)
